Rob Calvert is a visual artist who works with two- and three-dimensional media. His painting is rooted in nature but is typically done without its direct reference. The work's visual language  intuits unfixed forms, open structures, and variable hierarchies. The three-dimensional work differs substantially from the paintings. It often combines media and artifact in highly symbolic forms with social and environmental themes.

Born in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1957, Calvert was graduated from Washington and Lee University with BA degrees in Art and Non-Western History; M Arch from VPI&SU; and attended the GSD professional studies program at Harvard University. He has worked as teacher and architect (U.S. and abroad) but has lived as in Sag Harbor as an artist and activist for the last sixteen years. Fellowship and residency were done at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and the Vermont Studio Center, respectively. He served as an art panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts. His solo and group exhibitions have occurred in institutions and galleries on the East End and in D.C., Virginia, and North Carolina. Collections are mostly private. Rob is married to Mary Woltz, founder and beekeeper for Bees’ Needs.
